Norwich wrestlers squash Sus Valley

NORWICH – Matching last year’s performance will be a tall task for the Purple Tornado. After Tuesday’s opening-night victory over Susquehanna Valley, Norwich isn’t backing down from that goal.
Led by victories from last year’s sectional place winners — Ty Rifanburg, Cole Rifanburg, Dalen Geislinger, and Eli Rodriguez – Norwich blasted the Sabers, 55-30.
“They looked great tonight,” said Norwich first-year head coach Bob Hagenbuch. “They wrestled hard and look especially sharp for the first meet of the season.”
Zach Mills (138), Dusten Marvin (152), Nick Murphy (160), and Cole Wiggins (285) all contributed pins in the Norwich victory. Norwich returns to action in the Clyde Cole Tournament this Friday and Saturday at Oxford Academy.

Frankfort-Schuyler 66, Sherburne-Earlville 65
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville offense was much better, just not good enough on Thursday.
Frankfort-Schuyler went 8-for-8 from the foul line in the fourth quarter – four of those charity tosses from Danielle Caivana — to rally past the Marauders (1-1).
“It was a tough one to lose by one,” said Sherburne-Earlville coach Karen Mulligan. “Offensively it was night and day for us compared to Tuesday. Savannah (Irwin) and Lilly (Berg) got more involved.”
The Marauders led by as many as five points in the fourth quarter. The host club was able to extend the lead with F-S’s leading scorer, Danielle Migliore, on the bench with four fouls.
Migliore had 30 points on the night and Caivana scored 26. That duo narrowly outgunned S-E’s high-scoring tandem, Irwin and Berg, who had 28 and 25 points respectively.
“Migliore is awfully tough and she’s going to St. Bonaventure next year,” Mulligan said. “Caivana can shoot it, too. It’s tough to hold both of them down.”
The Marauders made eight free throws in the fourth quarter, but needed 15 attempts to do it. For the game, Sherburne-Earlville went 19-for-35 from the foul line.
“They got quite a few fast-break points on us,” Mulligan said. “Between that and the foul shooting, that was the difference in the game.”
Berg added a team-high 18 rebounds in the loss. The Marauders are idle until Friday, Dec. 11 when they host Unadilla Valley.
