SHERBURNE – Vernon-Verona-Sherrill went on 10-0 run with under four minutes to play to snap a 47-47 tie en route to the Sherburne-Earlville Tournament title Saturday night.
After S-E tied the game up with 4:15 to play, Connor VanDreason answered for V-V-S with the tie-breaking three with less than four minutes to play. One possession later, Matt Nell hit another three ball to propel the salvo.
“I thought we played pretty well, they just made some tough shots on us,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard.
Davey Moffett had nine points in the fourth quarter for V-V-S finishing with 24 for the game to earn MVP honors. “Moffett is really tough, and we developed a game plan to contain him,” Vibbard said. “In doing that, other guys on their team stepped up.”
The loss for Sherburne-Earlville overshadowed an outstanding offensive performance by junior Matt Hull. Hull poured in a career-high 30 points, while teammate Gavin Giroux scored 14.
Hull and Giroux were the Marauders’ all-tournament picks. “Matt had a great game for us, and as a team, I thought we moved the ball much better on offense,” Vibbard said.
S-E plays a non-league game at Cooperstown Wednesday.
In the consolation game, Central Valley Academy doubled its points output from Friday holding off the Storm.
Kaydn Perez scored 16 points for CVA, which brought an 11-point lead into the final quarter.
UV’s Ryan Postma kept his team in the hunt scoring a season-high 24 points. Postma was his club’s all-tournament selection.

ELMIRA – Derrick Stark scored 20 points for END, which dominated the fourth quarter in a comeback win over Oxford (0-2) Saturday.
The Crusaders entered the final period in a four-point shortfall, but held a 20-6 advantage over the last eight minutes.
Kevin Davis led Oxford with 18 points, and Josh Nelson added eight markers.
“We played pretty well until the last six minutes,” said Oxford coach Tim Davis. “We had a couple of turnovers that led to easy baskets for them. They took the lead, and we had to foul them the last two minutes.”
END made 5 of 7 free throws late in the game to wrap up the win.

DELHI — Bainbridge-Guilford was hampered by a scoreless second quarter, and Hunter-Tannersville’s Chase Blattney and Ryan Radcliffe had six points apiece in the fourth quarter carrying H-T to a consolation game victory in the Delhi Tournament Saturday.
Sean Jones and Trevor Halaquist had 12 and 11 points respectively for B-G.
In the opening round of the tournament, the Bobcats were unable to sustain its offense after an 18-point opening quarter falling to Downsville.
B-G bucketed just 16 points over the final three periods with the second quarter – only two points scored – again proving to be the nemesis.
Jones had 11 to lead B-G and Halaquist scored nine.

Norwich advances to Schwan final
NORWICH – Norwich stormed into the finals of the 20th Annual Tom Schwan Tournament narrowly missing the century mark in a 97-34 blowout of Windsor Friday night.
The Purple Tornado play New Hartford in the championship game Saturday night. New Hartford advanced to the title game beating Norwich rival Susquehanna Valley.
“New Hartford is a very talented team,” said Norwich coach Brian Collier. “They have a good combination of senior leadership and talented younger kids.”
Norwich finished with more field goals (39) than Windsor had points, and Collier estimated that of those baskets, at least 30 were attached to assists.
“We got off to a fast start, we made shots, and we didn’t look back,” Collier said. “We had a lot of good ball movement and played very well as a team.”
Dashawn King came off the bench to light up the scoreboard in a hurry scoring a game-high 24 points. Carlos Ithier added 17, while Tre Bonham and Jake Walsh scored 13 apiece
Norwich pumped in 11 three-pointers to complement its up-tempo game. “We were able to get a lot of baskets in transition out of our press,” Collier said. “When they came out to guard us in the halfcourt, we got a lot of layups.”
King, Ithier, Walsh, and Jordan Vinal all drained three balls in the first quarter, and King picked up his pace in the second quarter accumulating 16 of his markers by intermission.
Norwich added six more trifectas in the third quarter — two from Walsh — upping its advantage to 82-19. About the only drama left was if Norwich would eclipse the 100-point mark for the first time in two decades.
In the junior varsity tilt, Norwich advanced to the championship game beating Windsor, 63-49. JT Vinal led NHS with 20 points, while Zach Race posted a 17-point, 11-rebound night.

Norwich rolls to opening win

NORWICH – Norwich did something in its opening game Wednesday night against visiting Windsor that it had not done in head coach Josh Bennett’s seven-season tenure.
That first-time happening was stunning six-player-in-double-figures-scoring performance as the Purple Tornado blew out the Black Knights why a whopping 56 points.
“This team shares the ball so well, and they always make the extra pass,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett, who agreed that it was the first time he had six players reach at least 10 points in a game. “We have so many kids that can score the ball. It was really awesome to watch our offense click.”
Shelby Benjamin had seven points in Norwich’s 29-point opening stanza. Benjamin was one of seven NHS players to score in the period. Benjamin topped the six-spot of double-figures scorers netting 13 points in part-time duty.
Freshman Taylor Hansen came off the bench to bucket 12, Bridget Murphy tickled twine for 11, while Meg Komendarek, Makenzie Maynard, and Kara Evans scored 10 apiece.
Norwich created much of its offense out of its defense forcing better than two dozen Windsor turnovers.
“We got out in transition a lot, and we were able to score a lot of easy baskets around the rim,” Bennett said.
Norwich plays Chenango Valley Wednesday, Dec. 9.

JOHNSON CITY – Greene shot less than 15 percent from the field, while Johnson City caught fire at the outset in the Wildcats’ non-league victory Wednesday.
JC drained six of its seven three-pointers in the first half led by three from Morgan Chilson.
“Johnson City shot the ball very well in the first half, and we’re young and looked like it tonight,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “We did not do well defensively at all in the first half. We were confused with assignments, and didn’t do a good job stopping their dribble penetration.”
The Trojans shot 4-for-34 from two-point range, but did make 3 of 7 three-point attempts. “We had some good looks, but we didn’t shoot it well at all,” Gorton said. “We were tentative and slow getting shots off.”
Greene (0-1) hosts Cincinnatus Friday in the first round of the Trojans’ tournament.
