Bears claim team title
WINDSOR — Chris Cirigliano’s title at 113 pounds was expected, Ben Bivar’s win at 138 pounds was a mild surprise, and Dylan Mondore’s championship at 220 pounds was probably a longshot bet at the outset.
The three Bears wrestlers earned spots on top of the podium with championship victories at the 59th Annual Windsor Christmas Tournament.
That trio carried B-G/A/H to a 38-point victory in overall team scoring easily outdistancing runner-up Vestal.  The Bears polled 160.5 points, while Vestal scored 122.5.
Norwich, standing in second place after the first day, fell to seventh with 101 points.
“It was night and day between the first day and the second day,” said Norwich coach Bob Hagenbuch. “We had five guys in the semifinals, and we knew we could go 5-0 or 0-5. And the (latter) was how it went. Every match was tough, and we knew that going in. We lost some close matches that we need to find a way to finish.”
It was also the first time in several years that the Tornado did not walk away with a tournament champion at the prestigious tournament.
“We train too hard to place seventh and it’s definitely disappointing and an eye-opener,” Hagenbuch said.
Cirigliano, third in the state the past two years, outpointed his Homer opponent in the championship, 5-0.
Bivar, the third seed, beat Deposit-Hancock’s 7-4 in the finals, while
Mondore, the fourth seed, beat the top seed and the second seed to earn his hardware.
Sherburne-Earlville senior Jack Buell was the only other Chenango County wrestler to win a championship.
Buell, third in the state at 195 pounds last year, pinned his way to a championship. Buell stuck his opponent from Vestal in the finals in just 1:24.
